Rome, Italy – 16th October 2025 – Zambia has been honoured with the FAO Global Technical Recognition Award for outstanding achievements in sustainable plant production and protection.
The award was presented to the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) during the 80th Anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the 2025 World Food Forum held in Rome, Italy last night.
The recognition places Zambia among the top global leaders in agricultural innovation, research, and sustainability.
ZARI was recognised for its exceptional contributions in the management of Cassava brown streak disease (CBSD), which was officially reported in Zambia for the first time in 2018. It is a viral disease that causes hard rots in cassava roots resulting in substantial yield losses.
In addition, ZARI has played a pivotal role in the management of plant genetic resources, development of improved crop varieties, and advancements in climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices that have enhanced food security and improved the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
Speaking after receiving the award on behalf of the Zambian Government, Ministry of Agriculture Assistant Director – Planning, Mr. Oscar Chita said the award symbolises Zambia’s growing global reputation for agricultural excellence.
Mr. Chita said it also demonstrates the government’s commitment to prioritising agriculture as a key pillar of national transformation through research, innovation, and inclusive development.
He said ZARI’s work in safeguarding over 6,500 plant genetic collections through the National Plant Genetic Resource Centre has played a major role in preserving agricultural biodiversity.
ZARI has been keen on the development of improved crop varieties and its advancements in plant health management and pest control which have significantly boosted productivity, farmer incomes, and resilience against climate change.
The FAO Global Technical Recognition Awards are presented to institutions that have demonstrated exceptional innovation and leadership in sustainable plant production and protection over the last four decades. Zambia’s recognition underscores the nation’s growing role as a model for sustainable agricultural transformation in Africa and the world.
