Mochipapa Research Station

Mochipapa Research Station is one of the ten public research stations under the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) of the Ministry of Agriculture, and is located 10 kilometers east of Choma District (MoA). The Mochipapa Research Station, like any other research station, is part of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS), which is charged with conducting public agricultural research on soils and crops

The entire land area available for research and development (R&D) at Mochipapa is 51.84 hectares, of which 34.42 hectares are partially fenced and currently used for On-station experiments and demos, with the remaining 17.42 hectares set aside as reserve territory for future R&D. The overall surface area of the offices is 1.15 hectares, with offices occupying 0.35 hectares.

The research agenda at Mochipapa is steered by ZARI’s Vision that focuses on being a centre of excellence in providing scientific leadership in the generation and transfer of improved and appropriate agricultural technologies through partnerships involving stakeholders and other beneficiaries. In light of this, the Mission statement of ZARI is to contribute to the welfare of the Zambian people through the provision of technologies and knowledge that enhance household food security and equitable income generating opportunities for the farming community and agricultural enterprises while ensuring the maintenance of the natural resource base. Concurrently with the Mission statement, Mochipapa has been working to embrace ZARI’s overall objective of generating and adapting crop and soil technologies in order to increase agricultural productivity through diversified production”. This includes the development of low cost sustainable farming systems for all major agro-ecological zones and farm sizes through participation of both the public and private sectors in research activities. Consequently, this would ensure the provision of high quality, appropriate and cost effective service to farmers.
