Welcome to the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute
The Zambia Agriculture Research Institute provides high quality, appropriate and cost effective services to farmers, generating and adapting crop, soil and plant protection technologies.
Technical Services Branch is responsible for the technical operations of the Institute involving timely generation/adaptation of technologies in soils and crops in order to provide high quality research services for the benefit of farmers. Technical Services Branch personnel are stationed in the nine (9) research stations covering the three agro-ecological regions in the country.
The Branch is headed by a Deputy Director and comprises the following core sections/units each headed by a Chief Agriculture Research Officer:-
Farming Systems and Social Sciences (FSSS) which coordinates and provides technical back-stopping in farming systems agronomy on the three agro-ecological regions (Regions I, II & III) as identified for purposes of ensuring responsiveness to farmers’ needs based on the human, financial, physical and other resources and specialization of each region.
Crop Improvement and Agronomy (CIA)with the responsibility of coordinating and providing technical back-stopping in plant breeding and agronomy in cereals, food legumes, oilseeds, root and tubers, plant genetic resources and vegetables. The section is mainly composed of breeders and agronomists and work in close liaison with the Agriculture Department post harvest activities.
Soil and Water Management (SWM)which coordinates and provides technical back-stopping in agro-forestry, soil fertility, soil survey, microbiology, soil physics and irrigation/research.
Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ)where the focus is on coordinating and providing technical back-stepping in plant protection (entomology, plant pathology, plant quarantine and phytosanitary services and food storage.
The above sections under the Technical Services Branch will interface closely with the Agriculture Extension Branch under the Department of Agriculture.
