Sorghum

sorghum value addition

Overall objective

The overall goal of the project is to develop good varieties and hybrids of sorghum  adapted to different Agro-climatic zones. Sorghum is the second most important crop after maize in Zambia.

Specific objectives

  • Develop high yielding varieties and hybrids suitable for food, feed and brewing for different agro-ecological regions.
  • Develop sorghums with good general resistance to all economically important diseases and pests.
  • Develop sorghums for with a high sugar content suitable for bio-ethanol production [Biofuels].
  • Develop appropriate agronomic management practices for each agro-ecological region and farming system and to work as a catalyst in the transfer of technology.
  • Maintain pre-basic and basic seeds of all released and pre-released varieties, hybrids and their parents.
  • Develop varieties and hybrids that are stable across locations in Zambia for various end-uses developed and released to farmers.
  • Make practical steps in place to ensure that seed of improved varieties is produced and made available to farmers.
  • Partnerships established with NGOs such as World Vision, CARE International, PAM, and Oxfam in extending sorghum technologies to farmers in Zambia.

Outputs-Projects

  • Varieties release by the Sorghum Programme
  • Sorghum seed multiplication under the FoDiS Project
  • Collaboration with INTSORMIL/Texas A and M
  • 10 trials are under research

Potential Impact

Eagle larger beer is now made from sorghum and this should stimulate sorghum production. The Stock feed industry can make use of sorghum and reduce the presure of maize growing on the farmers. Seed industries could produce sorghum seed and make money. Ethanol can be made from both grain and sweet sorghum stocks.
