Maize Research Programme



Overall objective

To develop varieties which possess useful characteristics for high yield and stability, desirable levels of resistance to important diseases and insects, tolerance to soil acidity, low N and drought, and desirable plant and grain type; and also to develop maize production packages for these varieties. 

Specific objectives

  • Development of genetically diverse breeding populations.
  • Improvement of breeding populations.
  • Development of inbred lines from improved populations and other sources.
  • Development of different types of commercial varieties viz.; open pollinated varieties (OPVs), top cross, double cross, three way and single cross hybrids.
  • Maintenance of seed purity of parents of commercial varieties.
  • Variety testing in cooperation with Extension, Farming Systems Research, farmers and the seed industry.
  • Development of agronomic technologies.
