Welcome to the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute
The Zambia Agriculture Research Institute provides high quality, appropriate and cost effective services to farmers, generating and adapting crop, soil and plant protection technologies.
1. Activity: Trained 300 farmers on finger millet growing
Output: The trained are growing improved varieties of finger millet a Lima each (1/4 ha) and their fields are doing well (Kasama and Mpika) districts
2. Activity: conducting on-farm demonstration throughout the mandate area. (Region III)
Out put: Farmers are able to learn and see the improved technology in their areas
3. Activity: Assist and guide seed growers on seed production of released varieties.
Out put: The seed of improved varieties is available
4. Activity: Breed high yield varieties
Out put: Varieties released: Nyika, Senga, Chibuli( yields 3-4tons/ha).
5. Activity: Developed production packages on released varieties
Output: There is an increase on farmers using the developed packages and their production had increased.
6. Activity: Developed production guides
Output: Farmers are able to plant without the pretence of the agriculture officer.
7. Activity: Post harvest assessment
Output: Farmers able to see the advantage of finger millets users in comparison to varieties.
SERVICES: The Finger millet Improvement Programme:
(a) Offers training-(production and seed growing)
(b) Advice on technology
FINGER MILLET PROOTOCOLS
1. Title: Finger Millet National Variety Trial (ZFMNVT) Objectives
To determine the performance of newly identified promising varieties against important a biotic and biotic factors in finger millet growing areas.
To assess and confirm the production potential and the overall performance of promising newly developed varieties (identified from preliminary varietal trial(s).
To identify the most potential and stable varieties(s) for re-confirmation purpose in National varietal trial.
Objective
To assess the production potential and the over all performance of promising newly developed finger millet varieties (identified from breeding Observation nurseries (advanced Generations progenies) .
To assess promising advanced lines and reject poor performers.
Master No: 601401
Principal Investigator: Rachel Ngulube Msikita
6. Title: Finger Millet Crossing Block
Objective
To generate new genetic variability in desired back grounds and recombine desired genetically inherited yield contributing / stabilizing components.
Master No: 601301
Principal Investigator: Rachel Ngulube Msikita
7. Title: Off-Season Nursery
Objective
To advance breeding progenies/populations and increase the seed in selected progenies/lines for trials. :
